ABOUT THE PRACTITIONER
Barbara Berst Adams, RMT, received rare foundational Reiki attunements which were discovered in Tibet to predate traditional attunements received by the well-known traditional Usui students. She received these in the traditional manner from Master to student. Her traditional Usui Reiki training/attunements were also received through time-honored methods from Master to student in 2000. This was followed by her Reiki mastership and an intense three years of apprenticeship and work with healers across the globe. In addition, she has received Celtic Reiki attunements through attunement from master to student and via her own ancestral attunement process. She now has experience with hundreds of clients worldwide, from African citizens to the cast and crew backstage during filmmaking in the USA. She is a pending member of the International Association of Reiki Professionals, minister and founder of the spiritual non-profit World Grace Foundation, and an ordained minister in the International Assembly of Spiritual Healers and Earth Stewards.
DONATIONS/FEES
Fees: 10% of all fees and 100% donated beyond suggested fees go to the World Grace Foundation to help her return to South Africa to bring healing, organic gardening and other supplies to the orphans cared for by her South African sister non-profit, the Shaster Foundation. You may receive a tax-deductible receipt for any donation that goes beyond the fair value fee that would ordinarily be charged for a Reiki session ($35 half hour, $55 full hour, $5 added to any session with aromatherapy). For those temporarily unable to afford a session, see Healing Temple, below.

VARIATIONS:

  • Traditional Session
Great any time, from a long, deep session to a quick half-hour lunchtime tune-up. Just pure Reiki, that's all. See it as relaxation, spiritual, or at the agnostic scientific atomic level, doesn't matter, they're all equal with Reiki!

  • Celtic Reiki
My ancient Celtic ancestors healed with plant substances as we do when we take olive leaf tincture, for example, to ward off viruses. But they also worked on a vibrational, energetic and spiritual level with the nature realm. Even modern research is discovering certain plants have healing qualities at this higher level. The Herb Quarterly recently reported researchers discovered the Pau D'arco tree attracts alpha waves that exert a positive electrical charge on human
    cells.

Reiki Secrets Revealed:
For those who get self-attunements, distance attunements, or in-person attunements with no further training. This will help you gain master-level knowledge that must go along with being a Reiki practitioner if you, again, cannot apprentice as I did for several years with a variety of different Reiki therapists in person. Apprenticeship added much knowledge including how to use the symbols, the history, the science behind how it works, which can be used with future clients. Here's a source of much of that knowledge for self-study.
Massage Therapy Success
For those seeking a Reiki therapist home business. Although the title states "massage," its marketing and therapy room advice are very valuable for setting up a Reiki practice and often not taught in Reiki classes nor even at massage schools.
Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal (3rd & latest edition)
For those seeking an addition or alternate to Reiki, Quantum-Touch is a wonderful complement. Many Reiki therapists say it "turbo charges" their Reiki. It can be learned from this book, and can even precede Reiki as a form of energy healing, as it does not require attunements, but rather specific breathing and imaging practices to vortex the energy to the client. Actual certification requires more study, but one can begin the requirements for certification immediately by learning from the book and keeping track of the hours of people you work on with forms provided by the Quantum-Touch center.

Celtic Reiki certification calls for additional attunements beyond Reiki Mastership, and sessions combine regular Reiki while being surrounded with healing plants of the season and the elementals you are drawn to, allowing their presence, energy and aroma to be in the room during your session. Specific plants used during sessions depend on the season and your choice, with lilacs, for example, being a favorite in spring. And for sessions on the island during any season, I like to include the native red cedar, which the natives of this island called the tree of life. You may add any plant you feel is a totem or that you have a special affinity towards. And if this happens to be rose, see below

  • The Rose Session and Divine Feminine
The essence of the rose carries the highest frequency in the plant world, believed to hold magnificent electronic healing patterns. This flower is often associated with the Divine Feminine, and healing the heart, which, according to HeartMath research, is where our connection to the Creator and inner guidance lies in waiting. The rose is also used in the elemental realm as a harbinger of love.

For the Rose Treatment, we will invoke the healing energy of the Divine Feminine and the loving energy of the rose. A vase of live cut roses and/or fresh rose petals will accompany us in the healing room. The essential oils of cultivated rose and wild rose will permeate the air, and the session will end with a foot anointment of essential rose infused carrier oil.

For this session, plan ahead for about 15 minutes of extra time to remove all footwear to soak and cleanse the feet before treatment begins. There is an extra $15 fee for this treatment.

  • Indigo/Crystal
Many people are attracted to the Indigo/Crystal phenomenon. I was told by Nancy Anne Tappe, the woman who initiated the movement, that I came in with Indigo energy… apparently a very early Indigo, and other "readers" have seen a transition to opalescent/crystal. If the idea of Indigo/Crystal resonates with you, I can focus on the Indigo/Crystal energy to help bring it into your world and balance it. I must warn, though, that I don't always agree with the popular New Age idea of who we Indigos/Crystals are, and the laundry list of how we're supposed to behave, and I do not counsel nor work with children who are out of control. Further, I do not agree that Indigo children's problems arrive simply because mom and dad were too unenlightened. It was their consciousness that brought us all here in the first place, and if we're so spiritually advanced, why is it their responsibility to have been light years ahead of their time. We Indigo/Crystals need to shake the huge blaming victimitis consciousness that conditioned us on our arrival which we heavily absorbed, ground our energies, while we also seek and find Oneness Consciousness so we can re-engage in earth's current society as trusting citizens resonating gratitude and light, and then we'll be able to manifest our dreams and complete our goals. As our inner world changes, so will the outer.

  • Baptism of Light
As a minister and founder of the World Grace Foundation church, I offer a Baptism of Light with a much different meaning than some baptisms of the past. It is a way for some people to seal, by way of a ritual in physical form where two or more are gathered, that which they have discovered was already true, they are divinity individuated. It is very much like a regular spiritual healing session, only we will focus on the energy of gratitude for this awareness, and commitment to continue its growth in the future. Mentoring by e-mail, which allows contemplation and the healing journaling effect of writing, takes place before such a session. Please contact for more information.

REIKI WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING
To learn Reiki, one traditionally receives attunements through ritual from master to student, learns the history, techniques and social responsibility of being a Reiki practitioner, and then practices both giving and receiving Reiki treatments. Barbara joins with other Master colleagues to give workshops in the Northern Pacific Northwest area on becoming a Reiki practitioner. Workshops include attunement to the rare foundational attunements not offered by traditional Reiki classes, and include all three levels of traditional Usui Reiki: Level I, Level II and Level III. Workshops are generally arranged when enough interested aspiring practitioners can gather. Contact via e-mail should you be interested.
HEALING TEMPLE
Barbara occasionally gathers with other healers outside her home healing room (usually in the northwest Washington State area) to bring Reiki sessions free of charge to those in need when requested by progressive churches or other group gatherings in service of peace and love. To arrange a Healing Temple for your organization or gathering, please contact her. If you are in need, consult with your church, social service or other organization about bringing a Healing Temple to your gathering area. These sessions are also how we have accessed those who are handicapped or with special needs.

HOW DO SESSIONS WORK?
Clients may choose a half hour or full hour session and choose whether or not to add aromatherapy, where the room is misted with your choice of essential oil of rose, essential oil of frankincense, essential oil of myrrh, or a special spikenard blend. Allow yourself 10 or 15 minutes afterwards to bask in the relaxation and rise slowly from your session. If Reiki is new to you, plan on another five minutes previous to your session so we can go over your particular desires and explain the session to you. A quiet healing room with massage table has been set aside in her farmhouse for your session. Clients usually start out lying on their back. They may remain this way for the entire session, or we may choose to have the client lie on his or her stomach for extra energy to be run in the spinal area. As soft, healing music plays during the session, you will remain fully clothed with shoes removed for comfort, so wear loose, soft, comfortable clothing. You are advised not to have tightness around the waist, such as with pantyhose or tight belts. The practitioner will hold her hands close to the client's body as energy flows from the palms into the client. If the client gives permission, hands will rest directly on the body.

LOCATION
The main location for Reiki sessions is Island Meadow Farm on Fidalgo Island in the rural area outside of Anacortes, Washington. Anacortes is 90 miles north of Seattle, and while it is an island, it is connected to the mainland by bridge. Anacortes is where people catch the ferry out to the other San Juan Islands.
We welcome you here! This home is a sometimes cluttered place where a farm and older farmhouse are being restored, writing and artwork are in progress, and two cats and a dog reside along with the farm animals. Be prepared for such sights and sounds while here, and remember you will be walking across mown pasture to reach the farmhouse, so it would be best to avoid white shoes, heels or any footwear where you're concerned about dampness. The healing room, however, is serene and private. Once an appointment has been made, specific driving directions will be provided.

You may use our bathroom with mirror before or afterwards to change clothes or touch yourself up if heading back to work.

WHAT DOES A SESSION FEEL LIKE?
As described by the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT): "A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing."

Clients are free to do as they choose with their Reiki energy sessions: They can be a form of deepened meditation or prayer, inner retreat, accelerated healing and deep relaxation, a time to access the "inner voice," and/or a road to spiritual growth.

WHAT IS REIKI AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
The International Center for Reiki Training describes Reiki in this way:
"Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.
The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force.
Reiki is described as being beneficial because it flows through negative parts of the energy field and charges them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears and realigns the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way."
The International Association of Reiki Professionals (IARP) further describes Reiki this way:
"A practice of transmitting healing energy through the hands; …the energy has its own innate wisdom to guide itself… Reiki energy is not based on belief, faith or suggestion."

MORE ABOUT WHAT REIKI IS, A SPIRITUAL/HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
In further defining the Japanese term "Reiki," it can be split into two parts: "Rei," and "ki."
The ICRT describes the "Rei" part of the word in a more spiritual sense:
"…we find that Rei can be defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. Rei is a subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and inanimate. This subtle wisdom guides the evolution of all creation ranging from the unfolding of galaxies to the development of life. On a human level, it is available to help us in times of need and to act as a source of guidance in our lives. Because of its infinite nature, it is all knowing. Rei is also called God and has many other names depending on the culture that has named it."
The "ki" segment of the word is becoming more well-known to the mainstream. Here is ICRT's description: "Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is flowing in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans. When a person's ki is high, they will feel strong, confident, and ready to enjoy life and take on its challenges. When it is low, they will feel weak and are more likely to get sick. We receive Ki from the air we breath, from food, sunshine, and from sleep. It is also possible to increase our ki by using breathing exercises and meditation. When a person dies, their ki leaves the physical body. Ki is also the chi of China, the prana of India, the ti or ki of the Hawaiians, and has also been called odic force, orgone, bioplasma and life force.
With the above information in mind, Reiki can be defined as a non-physical healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence, or spiritually guided life force energy. This is a functional definition as it closely parallels the experience of those who practice Reiki in that Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own flowing where it is needed in the client and creating the healing conditions necessary for the individual's needs. It cannot be guided by the mind, therefore it is not limited by the experience or ability of the practitioner. Neither can it be misused as it always creates a healing effect. ( It must be kept in mind that Reiki is not the same as simple life force energy, as life force energy by itself can be influenced by the mind and because of this, can create benefit as well as cause problems including ill health.)"
Reiki practitioners are attuned and trained to allow the pure, non-human distorted energy to flow from the Higher Intelligence, regardless of what's going on in the mind of either the client or practitioner, transcending healing modalities that are dependent on left-hemisphere analysis or human training and opinion.

WHAT REIKI IS NOT
Reiki energy is essentially "touchless," and is therefore not massage, touch-healing, nor any other form of bodywork that depends on manipulation of tissue or calls for the practitioner to move the client's body parts. There is no physical movement nor manipulation needed. If the practioners hands rest on the client, it is incidental, more for the reassurance for the client to feel the whereabouts of the practitioner and to allow the practioners hands to relax upon a surface while running the energy.

Reiki is not a form of medicine. Reiki is not in the category of the human mind trying to diagnose and administer any cure. Reiki practitioners move aside from the mind and allow a loving energy Higher than they are, with a wisdom of its own, to take over and pass through into the client.

Reiki energy is not a "gift" that only a few "chosen ones" can practice.
Every adult and child on the planet can become attuned and trained to Reiki, and give it to themselves, to others, and even to plants and animals. And just like there's the occasional prodigy born who can paint masterpieces with no art training, the occasional human that seems to be born already attuned and intuitively aware of Reiki occasional appears among our numbers.

Those who choose to practice Reiki for others often enjoy helping people, and feel a calling to do this as a career choice. And while such a personality can make Reiki as a career more successful for some, Reiki energy itself is available to all. Those who hire practitioners are paying for their time with the client, training and attunement, apprenticeship, marketing and educational work that led you to them, healing room, and continued updating of their abilities to focus the energy. No Reiki practitioner should be claiming to be a medium between you and your higher self, nor to have exclusive access to a higher power that others cannot access if they choose.

Reiki is not new nor a religion. It has always existed, and was particularly rediscovered and redefined hundreds of years ago by a man interested in how Jesus was able to be a conduit of higher healing energy, the "palms of Christ," considering that Jesus is attributed to having said that in the future, all would be able to do all that he has done. Reiki however, transcends any particular religion. Work with loving life force has been practiced by many advanced cultures and races, including the most advanced peaceloving Native Americans, but with different names. "Reiki" happens to be the term that stuck and is well-known.

Reiki is not in competition with other healing modalities. It evolves on its own without needing human-made new, more exciting names or descriptions. Though different than anything else, it is complementary to medical treatments, health routines and bodywork. Reiki is one of the oldest, most established spiritual healing and guiding lights on the planet, it has been forgotten but never gone away, and the energy coming to earth through Reiki seems to grow even greater as the earth's conciousness expands and is able to "download" and receive even higher frequencies. A 20-year Medicine Woman/Shaman for the Bella Coola tribe describes how powerfully Reiki works with the traditional healing skills of the Native Americans. This is the spirit in which Reiki works on earth, in harmony with anything aiming for love and healing. Some healing modality spokespeople come across as insecure about their modality's worth, often needing to make others lesser to make theirs appear better, using Reiki as the yardstick to try to compare "how much better they are than Reiki." Reiki, though, usually just sits knowingly, quietly and invites, waiting to be found. The list of healings attributed to Reiki is huge, and the ego of a Reiki practitioner could feel honored that it is the one so many feel they must measure up to and try to outdo, yet Reiki's non-human essence is that all are working in harmony and it will be found when and if the time is right.

Reiki does not replace what you perceive to be a higher power, nor force you to believe in a higher power if you do not. Rather, if you feel there is some sort of higher intelligence, it helps you plug yourself directly into that source without needing a medium to do the transmitting for you (it is the opposite of priesthood or mediumship where the intention is to keep people dependent on someone else being their conduit for them). If you are agnostic or something similar, you may understand Reiki as a quantum physical principle that allows your body and mind to operate on an accelerated level.
